Already this month, within the exclusion zone around the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, the construction of a new energy facility may begin. Ukrainian engineering company Rodina Energy Group Ltd. and the German Enerparc AG are implementing a joint project with a budget of $ 1.2 million. This is a solar farm, which may appear just 100 meters from the Chernobyl sarcophagus.
The modern Ukrainian authorities are very upset that the Chernobyl zone looks like a useless black hole on the territory of the country. It could and should be profitable - after the mass evacuation of people in 1986, there is a lot of empty space where you can implement bold projects. And it does not matter that there are fewer sunny days at these latitudes than on the coast of at least the Azov Sea, as part of the same state, there will be a solar power plant!
The statement cannot be considered controversial, if only because back in 2016, the Ukrainian government signed a contract with the aforementioned companies to sell the electricity generated at the solar power plant. The price until 2030 will be 15 eurocents per 1 kWh, which is 40% higher than the cost of a similar resource in Europe. Consider this as a long-term investment - at the first stage, a 1 MW plant will appear, but then it will be expanded to 99 MW.
The development of clean energy sources is not only a commendable initiative, but also vital. For Ukraine - especially in light of the constant problems with the supply of coal to thermal power plants from the eastern regions of the country and the steadily dilapidated Soviet-built nuclear power plants. And everything would be fine if you do not remember the risk of the corruption component of any project in this region.
