Last year's volcanic eruption increased Hawaii's area by 350 hectares

Kilauea volcano erupted from May to September 2018, causing massive destruction on the Big Island of Hawaii. But now, when the fumes have dispersed, and the lava has cooled, scientists have made the first ground-based studies and came to the conclusion that it is necessary to talk not about destruction, but about reforming the island. He has become bigger, richer and more interesting than before.

Last year's eruption of Kilauea was the strongest in the new history of US seismic observations. Lava in the form of 24 streams spread over an area of more than 36 square kilometers, destroying at least 700 houses and countless infrastructure facilities. But at the same time it turned out that the mass poured into the sea after hardening became a new part of the island, which received an increase of 3.5 square meters. km of the area.

And this is not a lifeless stone as it looks now, a year after the eruption. Solidified lava is extremely rich in minerals, and therefore, in a few seasons, tropical vegetation will flourish here. Or not - people have their own plans for using the new territory, especially since the island will still need to rebuild the lost and rebuild roads, power lines and other communications.

The study of lava flows began, in fact, from the very first days of the eruption, using helicopters and drones. But the scientists were very disturbed by smoke and acid fumes - especially where the hot mass collided with cold sea water. Now, the study of new territories in Hawaii is proceeding at an accelerated pace, a complete geological map of the lava fields will be drawn up by next year.
